If you're on a journey of personal or professional growth—or even if things are going great and you want to sustain that momentum—there are three key areas that can help you lift your game. These three core character strengths will not only shape you as a leader but also enhance the way you show up for your whānau, your team, and your wider community.

1. Deep Integrity – Living in Alignment with Your Values

Integrity isn't just about doing what you say you'll do—it’s about acting in alignment with what truly matters to you. Deep integrity means taking time to reflect on your core values and making sure your actions are congruent with them.

One way to explore this is by zooming out and imagining the legacy you want to leave behind. What do you want the people who matter most to say about you at the end of your life? Another approach is to assess key areas of your life—your work, relationships, and personal growth—and ask yourself: Am I living in alignment with what I truly want?

Integrity isn’t always the easiest path, but it’s the foundation of trust, credibility, and long-term success.

2. Courage – Stepping Into Discomfort

Dr. Thomas Stanley once said that courage can be developed, but only in environments that include some level of risk, difficulty, or uncertainty.

Where in your life are you avoiding hard conversations? Are there decisions you’ve been putting off because they feel too uncomfortable?

Courage isn't about the absence of fear—it’s about taking action despite it. The good news is that courage grows when you practice it. Every time you lean into a difficult conversation, admit you don’t have all the answers, or surround yourself with people who challenge you to grow, you strengthen this core trait.

3. Humility – It’s Not About You

Ego can be a major roadblock to growth. When things are going well, it’s easy to make it about us—our success, our influence, our achievements. But true leadership is about something bigger than ourselves.

Jim Collins, in Good to Great, talks about Level 5 Leaders—those who build organisations that thrive long after they’re gone. Why? Because they develop teams and environments where others can succeed, not just themselves.

Humility isn’t about thinking less of yourself—it’s about thinking beyond yourself. When we shift our focus from personal recognition to collective success, we create something truly sustainable.

Take the Next Step

Growth isn’t about mastering everything at once. It’s about taking small, intentional steps towards becoming a better version of yourself.

  • Reflect: What’s one area—integrity, courage, or humility—that you could work on today?

  • Act: What’s one small action you can take to strengthen that trait?

Kia kaha, keep growing, and keep leading with intention.
