The New Year is here, and maybe you’ve signed up for another leadership course—maybe even done your fifth personality profile in as many years. But let’s be honest—does that truly help when the pressure hits?

Here’s the truth: great leadership starts with leading yourself first.

Take this story, for example: A project manager, deep in the mahi, gets an email from the boss—“Why is this project falling behind?” First thing in the morning, that’s not the email you want to see. Instead of reacting in frustration, he responds with clarity and calm. What made the difference? Two simple daily habits:

1️⃣ Set clear commitments each morning – Knowing exactly what he needed to focus on kept him anchored, even when things got stressful.
2️⃣ End-of-day review – Taking stock of his progress helped him reset, let go of work stress, and come back fresh the next day.

By prioritising these small but powerful habits, he shifted from reactive to proactive leadership. Instead of firing off a defensive reply, he paused, reflected, and responded with clarity.

👉 The takeaway? Lead yourself first. Show yourself that your work and wellbeing matter. These small habits create the foundation for strong, grounded leadership.

Try it out this week. Set clear daily commitments and reflect at the end of the day. We’d love to hear how it goes for you!
